What is a thermocouple ? How Does it Work ?

A thermocouple is a safety device associated with Heating systems. When a central heating system is working gas is released through the gas valve into the pilot burner which then heats the main burner warming the heat exchanger and the water. The thermocouple sits in the pilot burner being heated by the gas released through the gas valve the heat is converted into a magnetic current which holds the the gas valve open. When the thermocouple fails or the pilot flame is blown out no magnetic current is produced and the gas valve closes shutting off the supply of gas.

What is a diverter valve and how does it work?

A diverter valve is what it says, it diverts the supply of hot water from the boiler to either the central heating, the hot water or the central heating and the hot water. The valve has 3 ports shaped in the form of a capital T. The hot water flows through these ports directed by a paddle or a ball mechanisim inside the T shape. By Blocking one or other of the ports with the mechanisim the water is directed to its chosen destination.
